DREAMS 
Everyone cares deeply about how he sleeps and treats sleeping with great seriousness. The part of our body that needs most sleep is our brain. Everything from neck down can do without it provided that it gets regular rest and food. The amount of sleep needed by humans varies greatly. Normal periods of sleep range from six to nine hours each night with seven and a half hours being the average.
There happen to be two main kinds of sleep - "vital" or "deep" sleep and "optional" or "REM" sleep. "REM" means rapid eye movement. It is called so because our eyes move rapidly backwards and forwards behind our closed eyelids. The first kind of sleep revitalizes our brain. The second kind happens when we dream. Short sleepers are able to miss out on "optional" sleep but not on "vital" sleep.
Feeling of sleepiness tells us whether we are getting enough sleep or not. From time to time we all experience sleeplessness. The causes of it are wide-ranging: pain, noise, hunger, excessive tiredness, stress and worry. When it happens it is very distressing. To prevent sleeplessness one should go to bed at a regular period of time, try to take a brisk walk or do some relaxation exercises an hour or so before going to bed. One should better stop eating heavy meals or drinking coffee. On the contrary, a cup of warm milk could be very helpful.
During sleep there seems to be a stage when a story or sequence of events unfolds in one's mind. These episodes are what we usually call dreams. What dreams signify has puzzled men for a long time. In the ancient world dreams were often considered prophetic. The ancient Greeks built dream temples so that people could get messages from Gods. Today thanks to scientists we know that most often dreams occur during "REM" sleep. Though we may not always remember our dreams they are very important for our mental health. It seems that dreams are a way of getting rid of unwanted or insignificant thoughts. Dreams can reflect our hopes, anxieties, worries and desires but it's not always easy to interpret them. For example, many people are worried by dreams of death. According to modern thinking they refer to nothing more than to changes in one's life or personality.
There are some people who cannot remember their dreams. When you catch yourself in the dreaming period and wake up try to write your dream down. You should move slow by and keep your eyes closed while you try to remember the details. Unless you do it the dream images might disappear and your mind will become blank.
