Television is very popular all over the world with many people. Almost all families have a TV set or even two. It is terrifically exciting and can be watched by different members of the family all day long. Television has many advantages, but some of its weak points can outweight them all.
In my opinion the main benefit of TV is that it is a cheap means of entertainment that gives pleasure to millions of people. TV is very helpful for those living alone. It brings them closer to other members of society. News production is considered by many to be the principle duty of TV. One can't overestimate educational power of television as well. It may be a window to the surrounding world. Children, for example, can learn a lot from watching educational programs. For a long period of time before the computer era TV has been and still remains for many sport fans the only opportunity to watch their favourite sports sitting in a comfortable armchair with a bottle of beer.
However TV has its weak points as well. First of all, there is an increasing concern about the effect of violence on TV when even wars are being brought into our living room. Watching scenes of violence children might believe there is nothing bad in killing or stealing, kidnapping or mugging if there happens to be nobody to explain.
Television is immensely powerful and can even spoil one's life unless a person has other interests. Sometimes TV has a terrible effect on family life. Families often spend time passively watching TV instead of doing something together. People stop speaking with each other, receiving guests.
Also TV sets are permanently modernized and becoming friendly to those who watch them, they are still potentially dangerous. A TV set can influence ones sight badly. Having been watching it for a long time one may feel tired. When watching TV one usually sits motionless and it is also harmful.
As for me, I am not a telly addict. I can't say there are many interesting programs on TV, some of them are really boring. Films on TV are mostly of low quality. Certainly, if I find a good film in a TV program, I don't lose the chance to watch it. I am fond of motor rally and watch Formula 1 almost every other Sunday. I try not to miss some of the news programs and enjoy watching dynamic police serials. When I had a Discovery channel I watched it too. Cartoon network sometimes is also very amusing.
In my opinion TV is neither harmful nor addictive if a grown-up person prefers to be selective. Unfortunately, it can be quite different with children. |
