THE COSTS OF ECONOMIC GROWTH

People want to live comfortably, to move quickly from one place to another, to drink fresh, clean water.
So multy-storey houses with warm, large, nice-looking flats are built in many cities, as well as in Moscow. People make windows of houses out of very good and expensive materials so that no noise or dust can get in. More and more people get used to modern cars. Urban motorways are built in and between towns to make it easier to transport goods and people. Car parks appear to save cars. To pass long distances airplanes are constructed, ships and trains are modernized. To get food and other goods for a whole week one goes to hypermarkets or food shops. Almost everywhere in the streets one can find fast-food restaurants.
The advantages of progress are obvious. People can easily get information about things, happening in the world, by listening to the radio and watching T.V. We live quite comfortably, we don't have to go far to get everything we need. We may find out how to get to any place thanks to good reference books and cities straight roads. Finally we feel ourselves more protected thanks to police, firemen and doctors.
But now there are already too many of us (almost 6 billion according to the information passed over the radio). Unless we protect nature around us, take care of air-pollution, of water we drink, we are really going to dye. If everyone does something really unimportant for a single person (for example, throws a cigarette stub or rubbish in a stream or in the street), the world very soon will not be fit to live in.
Car exhaust already threatens to choke our cities and it spoils the air that we breath. More and more thermal power stations appear to give electricity to our houses, and they also make air pollution worse. Hydroelectric power stations decrease the quantity of fish in rivers. Animals are unlawfully killed in the forests. The woods in their turn are mercilessly cut off. If everything remains as it is there may be a great environmental disaster.
It is necessary to do something to eliminate the problem, but I think that governments all over the world don't take adequate measures. Progress can't be stopped besides, practically no one wants to go back to the Dark Ages. It is ridiculous to expect people to suddenly stop buying luxury items and driving cars, but everyone should take care of the environment. To keep flora and fauna alive, air and water fresh is the only way for the mankind to survive. |
